36 Views of the Fiske Coal Plant is an installation creating a “blackout silhouette” of the smokestack from the Fiske Coal Plant, the Pilsen area power facility slotted to be closed in the coming year, on street facing windows at the NMMA. The installation will be photographed every 10 minutes for 6 hours, creating 36 views in total which will be turned into an animation. The project references Hokusai’s 36 views of Mt. Fuji in visualizing the mountainous smokestack and the anachronistic passing of time for those affected by its environmental contamination.

Guillermo Gudiño + Georgia Wall:

52 Translations is an ongoing long-term collaborative work created through a series of long distance, multidisciplinary exchanges. The process began in September 2011 when Georgia, an American artist based in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, and Guillermo, a Mexican artist based in Mexico City, established a structure for communicating through continual translations. The project will be completed in September 2012 when all 52 Translations have been created.

On July 28th at the NMMA Gudiño and Wall will be staging a live version of this process. Wall will be present and in conversation with Gudiño who will call in from abroad via Skype. During the performance the artists will work together to create a rapid set of translation exchanges revealing a bit more about the process behind 52 Translations.

AREA Chicago will launch a special web issue of AREA 12: Intersections, and take a peek at the print issue which will be released on August 25. The title for the event borrows from Graciela Carnevale’s statement: We conceive art as a critical doing that tends to invent ways of life more human and just. In this vision, art and social movements intersect in terms of desired effects – to create structures from which we can collectively resist and reshape our realities. Join them for a discussion about art, justice and transformation.

JULY_Dan Borelli & Tomashi Jackson: 36 Views of the Fiske Coal Plant

An installation by two Boston-based artists Dan Borelli and Tomashi Jackson, 36 Views of the Fiske Coal Plant is a series of 36 drawings of the Pilsen area power facility produced from descriptions that have been provided by 18 Chicago area residents. The artists use communication technologies and the grid scale drawing method made famous by practices of Mexican, American, and Renaissance artists to transfer 36 drawings onto the street facing glass surfaces of the Pilsen storefront studio and the NMMA in Chicago. The artists ask 18 Chicago area residents to describe their views of the plant from their daily domestic and greater urban experiences in Chicago. The material and visual experience of the Fiske Coal Plant will be transformed into a narrative interior experience driven by visual art traditions of observational drawing visualizing the mountainous smokestack and those affected by its environmental contamination.

JULY_The Institute for Species Systemization (ISS): Testing Site VII, Mimicry is Borrowed Protection

The objective of Testing Site VII is to examine the distinctions between language and utterances classified as nonlinguistic or zoosemiotic, while testing the ability of a human subject to perform in a pre-lingustic state. The sound patterns of local non-humans were recorded at the storefront space and performed at the ISS headquarters by Subject Number 00387877 for the mimicry study. Slides from the archive Microhabitats Are Worlds Within Worlds, will be also be on view.
